Barack and Michelle Obama help daughter Malia move into Harvard dorm room

Malia Obama has moved into her dorm room at Harvard University as she prepares to kick off her college career following a gap year.

The 19-year-old daughter of former U.S. President Barack and his wife Michelle arrived at the Ivy League institution on Tuesday (22Aug17) alongside her famous parents, who helped her move her belongings into her new abode.

The sight of Malia and the former POTUS was enough to cause a stir on social media, with students tweeting about their Obama sightings.

One user, who shared a picture of Barack and Michelle helping Malia, wrote on Twitter: "My cousin goes to Harvard & he saw @BarackObama & @MichelleObama on move-in day!"

Another user shared a picture of Malia alongside the caption: "My brother & Malia are about to be besties… as my dad stalks her."

Boston Globe reporter Steve Annear approached Malia for comment on the moving day but she declined, instead politely shaking his hand and heading on her way.

Malia is continuing the tradition of Obamas attending Harvard - as both Barack and Michelle are graduates of Harvard Law School.

The teenager graduated from high school in 2016 but then took a gap year before starting university, during which time she interned on HBO show Girls and worked as an intern at film and TV production company The Weinstein Company in New York. She also worked as a production assistant on Halle Berry's short-lived TV show Extant in Los Angeles, with the actress recently admitting that while Malia worked hard, the cast and crew could never really accept her as their PA.

"She was down to do whatever a PA is asked to do, and I had wild respect for her for that," she said on Watch What Happens Live earlier this month. "Everybody couldn't really see her as a PA, although she tried and tried to be one. We just couldn't really see her as one, but to her credit, she tried very hard to be one."

She continued to gush about the teenager, saying, "She was fantastic, she was amazing. She is such a smart, beautiful, young woman. Look at who her mother and her father are, so duh!"
